REST IN PLEASURE, BETTY ANNE DODSON
AUGUST 24, 1929 - OCTOBER 31, 2020
The Betty Dodson Project (current working title, THE GREAT AND TERRIBLE BETTY DODSON) is a feature-length documentary starring the pioneering sexologist and radical feminist icon Betty Dodson, who spent nearly 50 years teaching women to love themselves and their bodies.
The film will tell the story of how a little girl raised in depression-era Kansas came to be the woman who hosted group sex parties in 1960s Manhattan, brought vibrators to the first NOW Women’s Sexuality Conference in 1973, and created a detailed masturbation manifesto for Ms. Magazine in 1974 (the mail order guide, which began as a hand-stapled booklet called “Liberating Masturbation,” eventually became Sex For One, a bestselling book still in print today).
Betty was also a classically-trained artist and entrepreneur who, until the age of 90, led hands-on workshops and ran a website for millions of visitors all over the world seeking advice about women's sexual pleasure.
The Betty Dodson Project will speak to gender, power, and sexual dynamics through interviews with women from Betty’s Bodysex workshops, old friends, lovers, collaborators, and the many celebrities who admired the outrageous and notorious Betty Dodson.
The Betty Dodson Project is directed and produced by Alex Bruskin of Sprocket Films, who first met Betty in 1996 and followed her around with a camera for more than two decades.
